In the heart of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His existence was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales across the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant companions. Day in day, guarding his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.
Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as here a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
